Please Note:  The following are sample vows, taken from various sources.  Some some are from books, websites, colleagues, and some are vows that couples have given me permission to share.  My hope is that if you are looking to select vows that are pre-written, this will help you.  And, if you are writing your own, these may give you a better sense of what you do, and don’t want to express.  If you need any assistance with your vows, please don’t hesitate to let me know!

Vows focused on love: ​​


Groom: ________, when I met you, something I’d never felt washed over me. The familiarity and comfort I felt in you was like nothing else. I feel whole and complete when I am with you. You challenge me, make me question things, and really contemplate life. Through knowing and loving you, I am a better man. I promise to love you, with my whole heart, for the rest of my life.

Bride: ______, I love you. I wasn’t sure I would ever meet someone I could give my whole heart to, and then you came along. You make me laugh, and you make me feel safe. I want to walk with you forever, and through the twists and turns of life, discover more and more. You complete me. I promise to love you, with my whole heart, for the rest of my life.

_________ I promise to love and care for you and I will try in every way to be worthy of your love. I will always be honest with you, kind, patient and forgiving. But most of all, I will promise to be a true and loyal friend to you. I love you.

I, _______, choose you ________, to be no other than yourself.  Loving what I know of you, trusting what I do not yet know.  I will respect you as an individual, a partner, and an equal.  I promise to laugh with you when times are good, and endure with you when they are bad.  I will always adore, honor and encourage you.  You are my best friend, and I will love you always.

I, ______, take you, _______, to be my partner, loving what I know of you, and trusting what I do not yet know. I eagerly anticipate the chance to grow together, getting to know the (man/woman) you will become, and falling in love a little more every day. I promise to love and cherish you through whatever life may bring us.

You are the most beautiful, smart, and generous person I have ever known, and I promise always to respect you and love you. With kindness, unselfishness and trust, I will work by your side to create a wonderful life together. I take you, _________, to be my lawful wife/husband, to have and to hold, from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, for as long as we both shall live.

I vow to help create a life that we can cherish, inspiring your love for me and mine for you. I vow to be honest, caring and truthful, to love you as you are and not as I want you to be, and to grow old by your side as your love and best friend.

Vows that reference “God”, but are not traditional:


Groom: I .......(name).........., give the best of myself to you and ask you to be my wife.
As your best friend I promise to love and honor you with all I have to give, in the only way I know how - completely and forever.  We will always be together, secure in our love for God and each other.

Bride:  I .......(name).........., love you and give myself to you and will gladly become your wife.  I promise to love you and as your best friend grow along with you, allowing God to guide our lives and be willing to face changes together, secure in our love for God and each other.

Traditional Wedding Vows:

I, _______, take you, _______, to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.

I, _______, take you, _______, to be my beloved wife/husband, to have and to hold you, to honor you, to treasure you, to be at your side in sorrow and in joy, in the good times and in the bad, and to love and cherish you always. I promise you this from my heart, for all the days of my life.

I, _______, take you, ________, to be my lawfully wedded (husband/wife), my constant friend, my faithful partner and my love from this day forward. In the presence of God, our family and friends, I offer you my solemn vow to be your faithful partner in sickness and in health, in good times and in bad, and in joy as well as in sorrow. I promise to love you unconditionally, to support you in your goals, to honor and respect you, to laugh with you and cry with you, and to cherish you for as long as we both shall live.

Humorous Vows:


I, ______, take you, _______, to be my beloved wife/husband. I promise to love you and be your faithful partner, for better for worse, for richer, for poorer, when the Knicks are winning, and when they are losing, in sickness, and in health, and in Knicks-induced sickness. I will be true and loyal, and cherish you for all the days of our lives.


I, _______, take you, _______, to be my wife/husband, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, for even poorer when I've been shopping a lot, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.​
